Kava For Depression

Also known as Piper methysticum,  This herb called KAVA has a long and very rich history.

Kava has been taken and used for many years by people for their quest in reducing anxiety. As treatment for depression which is anxiety related, Kava is still relatively new.

There are more than a few of the European countries which have given the go ahead for kava to be used in the treatment of insomnia, nervous disorders and depression. In western countries like the United States, kava preparations can be purchaes as a dietary supplement.

The beneficial ingredients of the herb called kava are called kavalactones. These can be found in the dried rhizome area of the plant. Research has proven that kava can effect a GABA-receptor-binding capacity and is able to stop any excess uptake of norepinephrine. 

A study of Kava took place in Germany in 1997. Just over one hundred people who suffered from a non-psychotic anxiety were tested over a 25 week period of placebo-controlled, double-blind trial with an extract of kava. This study found that kava is similar to treatment with benzodiazepines. But the plus side of using Kava is there are none of the side effects.
