Diet and Depression

Depression does not have to be treated solely with medicine alone. Research has shown that by adopting a good daily diet, depression may be prevented. High fat foods can alter your moods significantly.
Even beyond research, you only need to view the film ‘Supersize Me’. This is a documentary film about a person who lives on nothing but McDonalds for a month. In the film, the subject experiences symptoms very similar to depression and could only lift his feelings when he went back for more McDonalds food.
Also, any diet which does not contain enough of the vitamins B6 and B12 can also bring on low moods, negative feelings and insomnia. All these are pre warning signs of depression.
Fatty acids which are found in fish oil are known as Omega 3. This substance has an affect on our mood and this was proven in research with patients when Omega 3 was given to one group and a placebo was given to the other. The Omega 3 group generally experienced a drop in the severity of their symptoms.
