Depression Pills

A wide variety of depression pills now exist to treat depression. Recently, newer versions of depression pills are now for sale that are safe and effective, more so than older depression pills. These also cause fewer side effects.

However, all depression pills, including the popular ones, carry certain risks and may still cause negative side effects. You should take the time to find the pill that’s right for you.

There are three main classes of depression pills. These  are

selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs),

tricyclics (TCAs), and

monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

SSRI depression pills are new and very popular. SSRI depression pills are used to increase the level of a mood-related neurotransmitter in the brain called serotonin. This type of depression pill usually has a smaller risk of side effects than some of the other depression pills. This should not be taken as that they’re the safest or have no side effects.

The worst side effects which SSRI depression pills exhibit is gaining weight. It can also cause sexual dysfunction. It’s often known that men who take SSRIs  can become almost impotent. And some women have been known to gain 30 pounds.

You could look for  natural alternatives instead of prescription depression pills,  just to make sure you avoid side effects like this. Prozac®  was the first SSRI depression pill. It was introduced in America 20 years ago (1998). Following on, many other SSRI depression pills have entered the market such as

Paxil®,
Zoloft®,
Lexapro®,
Celexa® ,
Luvox®

An older type of pill is known as Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Nowadays, these have fallen in popularity as they can exhibit many side effects.

Some of these pills are called

Elavil®
Tofranil®
and Anafranil®

The least often used pills are called MAO inhibitors (MAOIs).
Medical professionals like to prescribe other depression pills and sometimes natural alternatives. This is  because MAOIs need to be combined with a restricted diet. They are also known to cause severe side effects.

When you read all this, you can see why many people are now looking for natural alternatives.
